We’re happy to write from the Department of Extravagant Gratitude (D.E.G) to congratulate you on your recent extraction from the clutches of despair. We understand that the Safflower feeders are emptying and filling up again and that you, good woman, are keeping the finches well-fed, able to chuckle again at their quarrels on nearby branches, and quickly respond to emergency encounters with those pesky window panes. Your empathy for hard knocks is unsurpassed. Your tenderness and warm hands have shown healing powers. You have proven, once again, that simply getting up to face the ordinary pleasures of a morning, along with your prowess with a coffee bean grinder and boiling water, matter more than you may realize. Your children still love you, though they are far away, and your mother remembers enough to ask after them. Your patience with repetitions and the perseverations of your own mind is to be commended as well. Thank you for your window-gazing efforts. They are not for naught. Keep believing the blue birds will prevail with their brood in the box on the fence. That the neighbors at their windows are smiling today at the purple iris growing at the edge of your yard.
Best Warm Wishes,
Your Champions at D.E.G.
